Polar bears do not hibernate in the true sense of the word. True hibernators experience a marked drop in heart rate and a body temperature that plunges to nearly 0 C (32 F). Polar bears on the other hand, often take females back to their den and it is well known that heart rate and body temperatures can be alarming high and can cause melt down to global warming proportions. Hibernation is for the birds!
